Venue Announcement!!!

Save the Date!!!  Friday, May 3rd, 2013 during the First Friday celebrations in downtown Missoula.

This event will take place at Studio C on the corner of Higgins and Pine.  It is right between Axis Physical Therapy and Studio D, behind Jimmy John's.

Come and visit with the various artists, enjoy some appetizers, and place some bids on these silent auction windows.  It is all to raise money for Missoula Youth Homes.

Acrylic and Paper on Glass and Wood

This piece definitely means a lot to me.  Being a junior in high school and actively thinking about my future is really scary, but it's also exciting.  I wanted to convey that excitement in this work.  Creating a hot air balloon out of a map of Brooklyn represents how I will (hopefully) be going off into a world filled with exciting new adventures.  And even though I will be starting a new chapter by myself, I will know I can always come back down.

Acrylic on Glass, Etched Glass

While creating this piece I used masking tape to lay down a pattern and painted over it with acrylic, waiting until it dried before removing the tape.  Then I painted behind the pattern to illuminate the colors within it.  After this (on the front side) I put contact paper in the shape of buildings and laid down etching acid around them to make a faint effect.

When I hear about the window project, I wanted to do something bright and simple.  I love vintage designs and they were my inspiration for the actual painting on the window.  I wanted to keep the colors simple.  I used blues, white, and black to represent the colors of the sky.  I added tissue paper on the back to keep the tones on the design and to let some light through.  The designs were done freehand and painted with Acrylic.  The tissue paper was added after the paint dried.

This piece of art was created in 22 hours.  It's purpose is to explore ones inner thoughts on "What;s in the dark" and the light at the end of the tunnel.  It explores color in the darkness and underlies how one, under circumstances, may remain jovial.

I decided to paint the window because I thought it was going towards a good cause and I thought it would be fun.  At first I wasn't sure what to draw on it, but after looking at pictures on the internet I decided a sun would be interesting.  To see the actual sun shine through the sun on the window would look awesome.  Actually, painting the window was the hard part, because you have to work backwards and sometimes the layers of paint confused me on which one goes first.  After finishing it, it didn't turn out quite the way I wanted it to, but it actually looks really cool.  I can't wait to hear how much they sell for.

I like the swirls.  I have done a lot of swirls in my work.  I guess you could say that swirls are part of my style of artwork.  I put buildings in because Missoula has a lot of buildings.

Big Papa saw Shmemily drawing a tree from afar while she was working on a glass etching project.  Gwen asked if anyone would like to decorate a window so it could be auctioned off for the group homes.  Big Papa and Shmemily said, "Shicha" and combined Schemily's drawing with Big Papa's glass etching experience.

This piece has been donated to reside in one of the Youth Homes.  Please bid on this piece as a pure donation to Youth Homes.  The artists feel that the window speaks for itself and wish the viewers to take away only what their own feelings reveal. 

A Short Uptate Along with a Story of Determination

This project has taken on a life of its own!  We have had so many interested students that we have more than 40 windows that we will be showing and auctioning off at the First Friday celebrations in downtown Missoula on May 3rd.  The venue will be announced next week!

We have picked up over thirty finished windows this past week and will be posting pictures of the finished pieces soon.  During the process of picking up windows, we have had the opportunity to see some fantastic works of art and talk to the amazing students responsible for their creation.  One of those student's stories is below...

This is Garrett.  He attends Loyola Sacred Heart and has been working on a glass etching for the Windows of Youth project.  

The completed window was leaning up against an outside window in the art classroom.  Well, you might remember that we had some pretty crazy wind come through town this week. Unfortunately that wind blew open the classroom window, which in turn, smashed into one of the panes of Garrett's artwork.  

At this point Garrett could have given up and said his piece was ruined.  But not this guy!  He asked for a little more time so that he could painstakingly replace the glass and etch it again.  Now that is what we call commitment!  Thank you so much Garrett!!

Hellgate High School Works in Progress

Things are rolling along nicely with this project!  We have had so much interest that we keep returning to Home ReSource and they have been very generous in donating windows.  Here are a couple of the guys helping us out...

We dropped off the windows at Hellgate High School today, and in the process we were able to get a couple of pictures of works in progress.
